National Rescue Award for Swim Teachers & Coaches

The National Rescue Award for Swim Teachers & Coaches is a two-day supervision and rescue award for swimming teachers, coaches and instructors working during programmed activities, such as swimming lessons. It is suitable for teachers working in a wide range of swimming pools.

What does the course cover?

  • The teacher, swimming pool, and class management
  • Intervention rescue
  • Emergency action
  • CPR
  • First Aid

Pre-requisites:

The NRASTC course is open to anyone who is 16-years-of-age or older at the beginning of the course and able to:

  • Swim a minimum of 20m on your front and back
  • Be able to climb out without help and without using steps or ladders

National Rescue Award for Swim Teachers & Coaches LIGHT

The National Rescue Award for Swim Teachers & Coache LIGHT is a one-day supervision and rescue award for swimming teachers, coaches and instructors working during programmed activities, such as swimming lessons when Lifeguard or First Aid backup is available

Please Note: This award is only suitable when the facility has staff qualified as Lifeguards or First Aiders that are available to respond quickly to a swimming teacher or coach in the event of an emergency. If Lifeguard or First Aid backup is not available the standard NRASTC would be required.

Swim Teaching

Subject to demand, Carn Brea Leisure Centre acts as a training centre for ASA Swim Teacher courses in Cornwall.

ASA Teaching Aquatics Level 1 

This qualification involves teaching groups of 1-4 pupils from non-swimmer through the stages of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming.

The syllabus is completed as two modular units and includes:

  • Child protection
  • Sport equity
  • Health and safety issues
  • Equipment
  • Strokes
  • Lesson planning 
  • Schemes of work

Anyone interested in teaching swimming to apply, but candidates must be 16 years of age or above at the start of the course.

ASA Teaching Aquatics Level 2

This qualification involves teaching groups of 4-12 pupils from non-swimmer through the stages of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming.

The syllabus is completed as modular units and includes:

  • Child protection
  • Health and safety issues
  • Strokes
  • Lesson planning 
  • Working with an assistant
  • Schemes of work
  • Fundamentals
  • Anatomy and physiology

Units 1-5 will be held at Carn Brea Leisure Centre: Unit 6 will be work based assessments. 

Candidate must hold the ASA Teaching Aquatics Certificate Level 1 to apply, and must be 17 years of age or above at the start of the course.
